Soft power in a hardened world
There are moments when you simply cannot ignore current events. As the fall of the Dutch government dominates the media and opinions slice through the air like sharp knives, I notice once again how the tone is hardening. Anger, frustration, cynicism. And although I usually keep politics at arm’s length on platforms like LinkedIn, sometimes I can’t avoid it. What happens socially and politically also affects consumer behaviour and influences designers and creatives.
Between the sharp edges of polarization and the hardened world around us, a quiet counter-movement unfolds…
This line opens the theme Tenera Vis, one of eight themes from my latest trend book ATHOME AWX 26/27. Tenera Vis—meaning ‘soft power’—emerged from a growing need for gentleness. Softness as an act. Not resistance through conflict, but through quiet strength. Not confrontation, but walking side by side to make the world a better place.
The colours of Tenera Vis reflect this sense of harmony: powdery neutrals, creamy whites and tender greens in a tone-on-tone palette. A deep anthracite grey underscores it all, like a fine grounding line.
This aesthetic expresses an alternative worldview. A counterbalance to all that is fast, harsh and loud. Perhaps that’s exactly what we need right now. Not more words or opinions, but space for nuance. Because softness is not weakness—it is a choice. A form of strength.
Zachte kracht in een verharde wereld
Er zijn van die momenten waarop je niet om de actualiteit heen kunt. Terwijl de val van het Nederlandse kabinet de media domineert en de meningen als scherpe messen in de ether snijden, merk ik hoe opnieuw de toon verhardt. Boosheid, woede, cynisme. En hoewel ik me op platforms als LinkedIn meestal ver houd van politiek, kan ik er soms niet omheen. Wat er sociaal en maatschappelijk speelt, raakt ook aan consumentengedrag en beïnvloedt ontwerpers en vormgevers.

Met deze zin start ik het thema Tenera Vis, een van de acht thema’s uit mijn recentste trendboek ATHOME AWX 26/27. Tenera Vis—wat zachte kracht betekent—is ontstaan uit die groeiende behoefte aan verzachting. Aan zachtheid als daad. Geen weerstand door strijd, maar door zachte kracht. Geen confrontaties, maar samen oplopen om de wereld te verbeteren.
De kleuren van Tenera Vis weerspiegelen de harmonie: poederachtige naturellen, romige witten en tedere groenen in een ton-sur-ton kleurenpalet. Met een donkere antracietgrijs die als een dunne lijn het geheel onderstreept.
In deze esthetiek schuilt een alternatief wereldbeeld. Een tegenwicht voor het snelle, het harde, het ruwe. Misschien is dat wat we nu nodig hebben. Niet nog meer woorden of meningen, maar ruimte voor het subtiele. Want zachtheid is geen zwakte, het is een keuze. Een vorm van kracht.
